Keeping your dogs paws safe

Keeping your dogs paws safe

Tip: Protect Your Dog’s Paws from Hot Pavement Written by Abbie Devers

When the summer sun is shining and the pavement heats up, it’s important to be mindful of the potential dangers it poses to your furry friend’s paws. Here’s a short tip to help you keep your dog’s paws safe:

Test the surface temperature: Before heading out for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement or asphalt for a few seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it’s definitely too hot for your dog’s paws.

Walk during cooler times: Plan your walks during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening when the pavement is less likely to be scorching hot. This will minimize the risk of burns and discomfort.

Opt for shady routes: Choose shaded areas or routes with grassy paths whenever possible. Grass or dirt is generally cooler than pavement and provides a more comfortable surface for your dog to walk on. Use protective measures: Consider using protective dog booties or paw wax to provide a barrier between your dog’s paws and the hot pavement. Booties can prevent burns and offer insulation, while paw wax provides a protective layer.

Observe your dog’s behavior: Watch for signs of discomfort or pain during walks, such as limping, reluctance to walk, or excessively licking their paws. If you notice any of these signs, find a shaded area and check their paws for any signs of burns or blisters.

Remember, your dog’s paws are sensitive and can easily get burned on hot pavement. By taking these precautions, you can ensure your furry companion stays safe and comfortable during summer walks.
