How to tell if your jewelry is sterling silver?

Is it sterling silver or plated? Sterling silver should have a mark on the bottom. If there is no markings, it is probably silver-plated. You can also check the coloring of the piece carefully. Sterling silver is usually less shiny, duller, and colder in tone than silverplate. If you see parts flaking off or turning green, the item is plated.
